Coal
Coal is a significant driver of the Hunter economy. Newcastle Port is the largest coal export port in the world with more than $5 billion worth of coal shipped annually since 2006.
The coal mining industry continues to be a major employer in NSW. At the end of June 2007 there were 13,392 people directly employed in the five coalfield regions across NSW. More than half the workforce is based in the Hunter.
