Aluminium
The region has two aluminium smelters - one at Tomago and one at Kurri Kurri. In 2006, the two smelters produced 682,485 tonnes of aluminium.
Tomago Aluminium is the region's largest smelter, the second largest in Australia and the 11th largest in the world. Tomago produces aluminium ingots, extrusion billet and rolling slab, which are mostly exported to markets in Asia.
In 2006, Hydro Aluminium completed a $100 million upgrade on the Kurri Kurri plant to improve production capacity and environmental performance. The plant has a production capacity of 172,000 tonnes.
