Hunter New England Health
John Hunter Hospital
The John Hunter Hospital (JHH) employs more than 10,600 people and is the principal referral centre, teaching hospital and community hospital for Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and beyond. It is the only trauma centre in NSW outside Sydney and has the busiest emergency department in the State.
JHH is the region's largest hospital with around 550 beds. Patients from the Hunter and beyond are referred to JHH for treatment in a range of specialties, including:

- Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery
- Emergency Medicine
- Endocrinology
- Gastroenterology
- Kidney Transplants
- Neonatal Intensive Care
- Nephrology
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Located at JHH is John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The children’s hospital is a tertiary referral centre for children and young people ranging in age from just 23 weeks gestation to 18 years. The hospital cares for patients throughout the Hunter Valley and Northern NSW.
Specialty areas of care include: asthma, cancer, cleft palate, child protection, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, orthopaedics, spina bifida, trauma and head injuries.
The Royal Newcastle Centre
The Royal Newcastle Centre is a $112 million state-of-the-art health facility, which opened on the Rankin Park campus next to John Hunter Hospital in April 2006.
It is the home of many specialist services and some medical, diagnostic and outpatient services previously provided at John Hunter Hospital.
The Royal Newcastle Centre has 84 inpatient beds in three wards and 60 interventional suite beds. It has three levels and includes procedure rooms catering for a wide range of clinical conditions, consulting rooms for a wide range of ambulatory (outpatient) care services, operating rooms, overnight and day wards.
The Royal Newcastle Centre provides treatment for patients in specialities such as:

- Orthopaedic rehabilitation
- Rheumatology
- Urology
- Ophthalmology
- Dermatology
- Diabetes
- Immunology
- Podiatry
The Calvary Mater Hospital
The Calvary Mater Hospital employs 1100 staff and is a 187-bed facility. It is the Hunter region’s major centre for oncology services, haematology and clinical toxicology.
These services are supported by the intensive care unit, general and oncological surgery, general medicine and palliative care.
The hospital is also home to the Hunter Melanoma Unit and Hunter BreastScreen and boasts one of only two stroke units in NSW.
Maitland Hospital
Maitland Hospital is a health facility for the Upper and Lower Hunter Regions. The urban/rural population serviced is approximately 72,000 and incorporates Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Dungog and Raymond Terrace. The hospital is located 35 minutes from the John Hunter Hospital.
A comprehensive range of services is provided, including medical and rehabilitation, surgical and day surgery, maternity and child services. There is a busy Emergency Department and a coronary care/high dependency unit. Mental health, dental and renal services are provided on-site, as well as diagnostic services.
Belmont Hospital
Belmont Hospital is a 75-bed acute facility. Services provided include general medicine, general surgery, day surgery, coronary care unit, gynaecology, neonatal, obstetrics and a 24-hour emergency department.
The range of Allied Health Services includes: physiotherapy, social work, dietetics, speech pathology and occupational therapy.
Newcastle Community Health Centre
The Newcastle Community Health Centre was opened in November 2007. The centre is located in Hunter Street in Newcastle’s CBD.
Services include: after-hours GP; community health and nursing; dental; oral health; community acute/post acute services; rehabilitation and podiatry.
Toronto Community Health Centre
The catchment area for the centre incorporates 40 suburbs on the western side of Lake Macquarie. Its services include: community nursing, psychology, social work, speech pathology, urology clinic, pathology services, dental, a gynaecology clinic, antenatal clinic and GP access after hours.
