Hunter Medical Research Institute
The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is a partnership between Hunter New England Health, the University of Newcastle and the community. This partnership provides a unique opportunity to capitalise on its strategic advantage in health, medical research and biotechnology.
Bringing together more than 600 health and medical researchers from the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and Calvary Mater Newcastle, it’s the only institute outside of Sydney supported by State Government funding.

- HMRI attracts $4 million in infrastructure funding from the NSW Government each year
- A 10-year investment of just under $2 million by the University and Hunter New England Health has indicated a return of $22 million in funding to the researchers (1:11 return on investment).
