NSW Government Welcomes Drop in Newcastle Assaults
Minister for Police Michael Daley and Minister for the Hunter and Member for Newcastle Jodi McKay today welcomed a dramatic drop in the number of late night assaults in the Newcastle area.
Mr Daley said the drop in assaults in Newcastle and Newcastle West coincided with the introduction of restrictions on licensed premises in the region in March 2008.
“I recently visited Police throughout the Newcastle region and was pleased to hear that during the early hours of the weekend, the number of assaults has more than halved,” he said.
“In the 12 month period since the changes were introduced, there has been a 41% drop in the number of assaults in Newcastle and Newcastle West on Saturday and Sunday mornings between 1am and 6am.
