More growth for Newcastle Airport
Annual passenger numbers at Newcastle Airport have risen to more than one million people per year.
$45 million was recently spent on infrastructure making it Australia’s fastest growing regional airport.
The most recent economic impact assessment found that the airport supports 2,234 jobs and the airport precinct contributes $283 million annually in gross output to the regional economy.
A new baggage handling system which will be in place this year will allow the airport to handle up to two passengers annually.
Newcastle Airport CEO Paul Hughes said Adelaide is being considered as a new destination, as well as a third daily flight to Melbourne and from July a second daily flight to the Gold Coast.
International flights to countries such as New Zealand are part of Newcastle Airport’s future plans and will most likely be available in three to four years’ time.
